Ed continues hotstreak at Spring Fling

Congrats to Ed Hovestadt for another great win this weekend at the Borderland Spring Fling. Ed pulled out a two-stroke win in Advanced Masters.

I have to give props to AM2ers Andrew Duquette and Dave Mallen who beat me in round 1! Andrew shot a 53 and Dave a 55 while I found several trees and shot a disappointing 56. Nice job guys! Dave finished sixth overall in AM2 and Andrew tied for eighth.

Now some sad news. The #1 tag has been lost to a non-local! Devens WW tag holder Matt Arminio tore it up on his home course and won AM1 along with the #1 Devens tag! Hopefully he'll make it back to the Hill soon so we can reclaim what is ours. ;-)

Devens Dubs for Dave's Daughter - Sat June 27

We are having a quick and dirty fundraiser for one of our own, Dave James.

His daughter Meg was diagnosed with Leukemia in April and although insurance is covering a good chunk of the medical expenses, we thought we'd help with everyday expenses while they travel back and forth to Boston Childrens Hospital (parking, gas, tolls, food, babysitting, etc).

Update: After almost two months in the hospital, Meg has returned home!

Many of you have told me that you have heard great things about the Hill but still haven't made it out yet. Well, here's your chance to experience Devens AND help someone at the same time with a fun day of golf.

We expect several James family, friends, and coworkers to attend. Thank you to the Pros who have already committed to help out on this special day -- TM Dyer, Mike Connell, Jim Wills, Matt Stroika, Steve Dodge. Any other Pros that would like to help, please email me.

The Details

• Saturday, June 27
• $20/person
• 1 morning round of pseudo-random dubs (format may change slightly depending on the number of newer players that show up.)
• 50/50 payout (50% to James family, 50% to payout)
• 9:00-9:30 registration, 9:45 players meeting, 10:00 tee off
• Bid for the honor of being Dave's partner!
  

• Afternoon round - Most new players may not want to stick around for two rounds, so Rd2 we may reshuffle the cards or just play singles for $5-10
  

Format
One division. Players loosely grouped into skill levels (A, B, C) and then randomly paired with someone in a higher/lower level. This may change depending on number of golfers.

Ken and Alan tear it up at the Hunt!

Congrats to Ken Gary and Alan MacLean for winning their respective divisions this weekend at the Hunt for a Cure tournament in Medfield, MA.

Ken continued his hot streak by winning Pro Grandmasters while Alan continues to impress in AM2. I think this was Alan's first win, too.

Ed Hovestadt also cashed in AM Masters, while Dave and John, uh... didn't!

Hole 11 is hot!

There's been another ace on hole 11! Ken Gary nailed it at Sunday league with a Buzzz. Straight up the left alley. Ka-ching!

That's his second-career ace, both at Devens. Nice job, Ken! Must have been that snazzy shirt you were wearing that you won at the King of the Hill.

Just got this great post yesterday that I wanted to share. Thanks for the kind words, Ryan! Top ten? Wow! Definitely contact me the next time you are in the area and I'll give you the insiders tour.

I just played Devens for the first time on Monday. I travel to Manchester, NH a couple times a year to visit family and I always try to play a new course or two while I'm there. Anyhow, I wanted to tell u guys that you've done an EXCELLENT job with Devens! I've played around 100 courses or so around the nation, and I'm pretty picky/snobby when it comes to course design. Devens for sure makes my top 10 all-time list!

The signs were excellent, everything was excellent. I hope to get out there again next time I'm in the are for some competition. I had the family with me this time, so I was limited to only one round, but WOW, what a great place.

The Hill hits the road ... and wins!

Hats off to Hillfolk Arty Graustein, John Borelli, Pete Tolvanen, and Marcy Buchanan for kicking butt this weekend at two different tournaments!

On Saturday, despite it being his first time playing the course, Arty took second place in AM1 at the soggy Sap Bucket Open in VT.

On Sunday, John and Pete finished first and second in AM1 at the Terrace Pines Open in NH. Marcy had her first real battle for first place but lost by just one stroke to the local ace in Intermediate Women.

Great job, everyone!

Speaking of Atwoods....

I just realized that I never properly thanked Mindy Atwood for her help with designing our tee signs. Mindy's magic came through as she took my idea and turned it into reality. I must say they came out looking pretty awesome (and going by comments and emails I've received, other people think so too!).

So, thanks again Mindy! You are indeed an Awesome Atwood.

Taking on the other hill

Another weekend, another tournament, another successful day for the HillBillys. This Sunday, we headed over to Leicester to play Maple Hill 4. Seven out of nine of us cashed, and six finished in second or third place.

Awesome Atwood!

Wurd up to Joe Atwood for his first career ace this weekend! Joe hit hole eleven on Sunday in front of the whole family. That's the way to do it, boy!

I just hucked my Halloween edition BuZZ straight up the alley. It kissed off the last tree on the left and ..... CHAINS. SAWEET!

I think it is the first time 11 has been aced, too.

I know it's hard for some people, but try not to be a loser

We are happy that so many people have come to the Hill and keep coming back for more. It proves that we have a great course. But, we are not happy with the people who have been littering on the course. You guys are complete losers.

To the jerks who recently left 24 empty beer cans and 8 empty Red Bull cans strewn about the course -- you are no longer welcomed at our course, you friggin' losers.

Show some respect for all the hard work we have done to build you a FREE disc golf course. Of course, I'm probably preaching to the choir here.

PS. And in case you have forgotten, cigarette butts are litter too. Snuff them out and put them in your bag.

Golf for a good cause

This tournament is a charity event to help raise money and awareness for SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and will be full of many extras that you cannot get at most tournaments. Please consider joining us for the weekend as we as a disc golf community, show our charitable spirit and help SMA hunt for a cure!

Rob is well-known throughout NEFAland for his fun and unique tournaments like Pokerpalooza, so this event promises to kick butt too. He has a whole slate of things on tap, so do the right thing and play in this charity event!

Another good showing for the Hillbillys

The Hill continued its good showing at area tournaments this weekend. At Saturday's Amesbury Pines Open, Ed Hovestadt took down Advanced Masters and took the traditional victory plunge into Dano's pool, while Alan MacLean collected some AM2 hardware for third. Marcy Buchanan also came in third in Intermediate Women. Nice job golfers!

On Sunday, Alan continued his winning ways and took third at the Eastern MA Championships at Pyebrook Park, while Sam Misuraca continued his domination in the recreational division with his second win of the year! Nice job Sam!

Turkey frame!

The rumors are true. There's a turkey playing the Hill!

As we were setting things up the morning of the King of the Hill tournament, Rob and I heard and finally saw a turkey wandering around hole 4. A few golfers also saw it during the tournament, but hole 3 sponsor John Knowles and his son actually got photographic evidence the day after!

Hillbillys go mental

A few of us Hillbillys played at the Northampton Mental State Western MA Championships this past Saturday. The results still haven't been posted yet, but from what I remember Matthew Duquette tied for 4th in AM2, Marcy B won her second Intermediate title and a CTP, and I missed out on winning my second tournament in a row by one stroke and finished second in AM1.

Good job, golfers! Next week, a bunch of us will be at the Amesbury Pines Open on Saturday and the Pyebrook Eastern MA Championships on Sunday. Good luck, everyone! Hill Yeah!

First time, long time...

Well, that was fun!



I went on just after 2:00 after the Fandango guy's interview about how great the new Star Trek movie is. As we were driving in, it was cool hearing Ray mention me as an upcoming guest.

After a brief off-air hello, we jumped right into it. I fumbled the start a bit when Ray led me with an open-ended statement about disc golf and then stared at me waiting for my response. That threw me off a bit since I was waiting for a specific question, but I recovered. I got the hang of the whole thing after a few more questions.

I was on for 9 minutes and it went pretty fast. I had so much to say and explain, but the questions were general in nature. I think I did okay for my first time and I'll definitely do better the next time around now that I know what to expect.

We chatted for a few minutes during the commercial break and I showed him my bag and discs. He seemed interested in giving it a try with his 12 yr old. Then some guy in a suit came in the studio, so we took off.

Marcy recorded it on my camera and once I splice it up into parts small enough for YouTube, I'll post it.

Thanks to episodes of WKRP in Cinncinati and Fraiser, the station sure was not what I had pictured in my mind!

This afternoon I got a call from "Livin' for the Weekend" host, Ray Shackett, from 980 WCAP-AM out of Lowell. He had seen the article in the Lowell Sun and wanted to know if I'd like to be a guest on his show and tell his listeners a little more about Devens disc golf.

Devens does it at the Dam!

Well, this is strange because I do not have the same creative flair as John, but here goes!

Devens Hillbillys had a great turnout yesterday and I am happy to report that we had 4 who placed and cashed. Alan MacLean tied for 2nd in AM2 (winning his first tournament cash!), Mike Connell placed 3rd in Pro Grandmasters and Jim Bobka placed 3rd in AM Masters. Oh yeah, I almost forgot...John won the AM1 division! Hill Yeah!!!!!

Of course, he did not make it easy on me -- he had to do it in a one-hole playoff with Mike Murphy. So let me back up a little. John finished his round before me (don't even ask where I ended up - let's just say I didn't come in last!) and when I asked how he did, he nonchalantly says, "I'm tied for first." Man, I would be doing cartwheels, but I know he was trying to keep his head in the game and not get overly excited.

So after what seems like forever they finally make their way to tee 1. There was a gallery of people all watching them. I can only imagine what it is like to have 50 or so sets of eyes watching me drive off the tee!

After both having good drives, John threw his approach first and landed a few feet from the OB water. The gallery oohed and ahhed. Mike's approach landed in the OB water and he putted out. John now had to hit his putt to win, and he did!

He also won the CTP for AM1s. I'd say he had a good day all around!

Congrats to the other Devens regulars for representing... John Hart, Bradley Arnall, Sam Misuraca, Jeremy Travis, Matt Muller, Matt Duquette, Andrew Duquette and, oh yeah, me. :)

Although my putt for the win was only 10 feet, it was definitely the toughest putt I've ever had to make! What pressure!

The NEFA tournament season is now in full swing with an event every weekend until about June. With Devens on the rise, I'm sure I'll be posting more good news in the future. Watch out for the HillBillys!

Preliminary KOH hole assignments

Here are the preliminary hole assignments for Saturday. Be sure to double-check your hole when you sign in. Hmm, that sounds a bit weird.

• Please make your TDs happy and arrive early to check in (8-9AM). Each player must sign our waiver before chucking a disc. We are on the site of an old military base, after all.
• Those golfers who want their scores automatically added to their discgolfscene profile, please email me your email address and/or PDGA #.

After a lot of hard work, the Hill is looking great and has been getting a lot of play. It's been fun preparing for this event and we hope everyone has a great time. Best of all, it looks like Mother Nature is going to give us a nice warm and sunny day!

Oh, no, it wasn't the airplanes. It was Beauty killed the Beast.

There have been three major releases of the movie King Kong. The original made its debut in 1933, followed by another in 1973, and finally the most recent 2005 version.

The 1933 version starred Fay Wray and had several working titles including The Ape, The Beast, and The Eighth Wonder. It grossed $90,000 its opening weekend, the biggest opening ever at the time.

The 1976 version featured Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, and Jessica Lange and received an Academy Award for Best Special Effects, an award it shared with Logan's Run.



The 2005 version featured Jack Black and Naomii Watts. It took in $9.7 million on its opening day and won three Academy Awards.

The course will be closed next Saturday, April 18, for our King of the Hill tournament. This thing has been sold out for weeks, so if you didn't get in and would like to volunteer, let us know.

Mighty fine

A lot of hours have been put in at the Hill the past two weeks and she's looking mighty fine.

Thanks to all who have helped with the cleanup and improvements, especially Jim Bobka, John Rodenhizer, Rob Walker, Dave James, and Ken Gary. And thank you to Sean Franchi of Fly by Night discs for the bench donation.

We had a record 21 golfers last night and several more new faces. A couple pros dropped by to show us how it's done, too. Tim Walsh shot a nice 51, but looked like he knew he could have done better. Oh, to be Tim and be disappointed with a 51! :-)

No aces this week, although I did clang one off the basket on 17. Mark my words, I am going to ace that mofo this year.

I had a feeling I'd get a few of you April Fools this year, and I did. I hope I gave you a chuckle today. And for those of you who still don't get it, there is no raffle and there is no car. There is no way I am trading in my truck for a sedan!

Tonight through next Wednesday, I will be selling raffle tickets for a free Hyundai Accent. Yes, you read that right. $20 a ticket. All proceeds go straight to the course insurance fund.

Since I lost my job a few months ago, I've been looking at ways to save money. Unfortunately, getting rid of my gas-sucking truck kept popping up on top of the list. So last weekend I bit the bullet, said a tearful goodbye to Big Blue, and bought a pretty nice gas-sipping Hyundai Elantra with the nice going away present my previous employer gave me. (Thank you severance package!)

New England Hyundai dealers are having this crazy promotion where if you buy a new '09 model, they throw in a free Accent. Yep, unbelievable, but with the way the economy is these days, they are trying anything to get people in the showroom. They are also letting you return any new car you purchase from them if you lose your job in the next year. Wow!

Since I have no need for two cars, I thought it would be fun to raffle it off and then donate the money to the course.
