We're in the NEFA News

Have you read the article about our course in the latest NEFA News winter issue? It's on page 23. There are also some good articles on the handful of other new courses in NEFAland.

NEFA News is much bigger than the world's smallest newspaper, the tiny micro journal Vossa Senhoria. The original editions measured 7 x 10 cm (2.75 x 3.94 in), but then shrank to a tiny 2.5 x 3.5 cm (0.98 x 1.38 in) in1985. The weekly newspaper has a circulation of around 5,000 copies, and each edition has around 16 pages.

The Tree Circus

I was thinking about doing this to a few trees out on the course. What do you think? Learn more about Axel Erlandson and his Tree Circus.

Looks like arborsculpture has been around for hundreds of years:
Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), a well know clairvoyant, wrote in one of his books titled Earths in this Universe that he was shown sanctuaries that were constructed of trees not cut down but growing in their native soil. By cutting and pruning the branches, the inhabitants were able to grow walls, floors, roofs and stairs.

Introducing the Golfrisbee --- Umm..... what?

Looks like an Aerobie, but you throw it with a golf club. Great for fishing (throwing your bait out far) or for throwing around the house. All I can say is wow.

Watch these guys try to shoot one with a shotgun. Three minutes you'll never get back, but some bitchin' tunes. (BTW, they never hit it)

What's With the Tires?

Bill the Neighbor and I played a round this afternoon and I noticed a pile of chopped up tires at the bottom of the hill that leads down to hole 3 (near the cinder block). There was snow on it, so it's been there for at least a week. Anyone know anything about it? I know that whoever uses the land to the right of hole 1 where the tractor trailers are has a huge pile of finely-chopped tires, but I have no idea why they, or anyone, would dump a load of recycled rubber in the middle of the woods. I am a bit annoyed.

I also noticed someone decided to bend back and break a sizable branch on fairway 4 and left it dangling from the tree. Argh. Come on people, if a branch is in your way, learn to throw around it.

And to those of you dropping your wrappers and empty styrofoam cups of hot chocolate on the course, please use your brain and throw your trash out at home. Let's keep our course looking good -- she's but a baby after all.

Pinard's Landscaping Plants an Ace

Pinard's Landscaping has signed on as an Ace sponsor and will be building something to help make the climb down Hole 16 a little easier! This is great news! Brian met with the Pinard brothers this morning and they are pumped about helping us out and bringing their kids out to try disc golf. Thanks guys!

Pinard's Landscaping does everything from tree and shrub selection to granite, brick, and stone construction, and also has a popular florist and gift shop a mile or so from the course. We are definitely going to have one of the best-looking courses around. I can see it now -- flagstone pavers between every hole, stone walls along the fairways, and flowering bushes everywhere! :>)

Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs

We received a sign prototype last week from our sign guy Wally at Sign-A-Rama. Here Brian shows off a sample one I designed. Along with the basic hole number, distances, elevation, and map, we plan on including a brief Devens history tidbit on each sign. So watch out, you may learn something about the old Army base while you play!

Each Ace level hole sponsor's info will also be included below the main sign. Birdie and Par sponsor signs will be grouped together in a separate area, probably near the practice area or tee one. Damn, these are some sweet signs!

We hope to get the signs made, paid for, and installed by the Summer once we finalize all tee and basket locations. Only a few hole sponsorship left, though, so don't lose your chance at a lifetime sponsorship on the next best course in New England!

His Girls Are Speedy!

Let's hear it for David James, owner of Pre Season Speed and sponsor of DDGC, as he coached his girls 4x200 meter relay track team to record-breaking victory this weekend!

The Acton-Boxborough Regional High School girls team broke the MSTCA Coaches Elite Meet record and ran the third-fastest time is MA history! Way to go, girls (and Dave too)!

Gervais Ford Lands a Birdie!

You gotta be tough to play the Hill. That's why it's a perfect match for our latest Birdie sponsor, Gervais Ford -- Ford tough! Rumors concerning free F250 Super Cabs for the Devens Disc Golf Board of Directors are completely false, however.

Gervais Ford is located just outside the 110/2A Devens entrance at the rotary. After your next big tournament win, stop by and pick up a new car or truck. Thank you Gervais Ford!
